NARRATIVE:  Planned to take today as a rest day but the gite didn't open until after 4:00. Ended up wandering around. Bough a fleece jacket. Tried to get a sim for my phone... worked on that from 10 to 4. Ridiculous, but it's done. Got it for 15 euros at the post office. Ribs are sadly not improving.

My feet were tired by the end, but no blisters. My shoulders didn't really hurt, but stepping down hard with my left foot kills my side. I do think it's getting better, though. Pretty uneventful day except at about 21km. There was a lovely little rest area with chickens so I thought I'd take a 20 minute break before tackling the last 3 or so km. This huge black crow let me know I was sitting on his bench. So, I moved to a second bench. He went after the hens, but then turned his attention back to me, pecking at my backpack and my hat. 06 September 2024 - Pre walk thoughts...

In March 2024, I suddenly realized that my U.S. passport had expired the previous month. I have had a current passport since 1978, so this left me feeling anxious. Not having a passport meant that I couldn’t just pick up and go somewhere, especially now that I live in Mexico. I immediately scheduled the earliest appointment possible at the consulate general in Guadalajara to apply for a renewal. When I returned home after my May appointment, I decided to scan airfares to Europe... just out of curiosity. I was pretty sure it was a waste of time because I had no doubt that a future trip would be price prohibitive. To my surprise, I was able to put together a round-trip ticket from Guadalajara, Mexico to Barcelona, Spain for $669.00 USD! The flights were in September and allowed me to stay abroad for just over 3 weeks, which is ideal.  I had no choice. I had to book it. It's impossible to do this without an active phone. Used to be that you could send an email the night before.  Now, everyone I meet say things like, "oh, I reserved my whole trip 6 month in advance." So, now every gite you call is "complet". When I heard it was supposed to rain today, I tried to contact LA Malle Postale to have them transport my bag. Nope, now you have to reserve in advance. So frustrating.  I was doing ok this a.m. but by 12:00 it started pouring. My back was killing me from the weight of my pack.
